Napoleon De Beer

14 March 2013

16 year old Naps de Beer, a King Edward VII School learner and 1st XI cricketer possibly wrote his name into the record books at Old Edwardians when he scored 235 for the Sunday 1st XI against Roshnee. It certainly is one of, if not the, top score by a member of the Society in league cricket.

Naps found himself opening the batting. “Some of the players were late and their captain wanted to get the game started, so I opened.” Said Naps “I started to hit the ball out of the middle of the bat from ball one, but was surprised that I got to my 100 so quickly.”

“From there I started to count the runs I scored so knew I was near the 200 mark. I was so excited I thanked the Lord when I reached 200.”

His previous highest score was 156 for the School against Pretoria Boys High last year.

Naps started playing from an early age and played for Germiston under 9 at the age of 6. Originally a right handed batsman, his father, who was coaching him at that time, changed him to being left handed, and he has not looked back since then. Batting is the only thing he does left handed, just like Graeme Pollock.

He represented Gauteng under 15 last year, and has played for the Society for the past two season and has played in the Premier league team three times.

“My goal is to get a contract with the Gauteng Strikers by the time I am 18, and then go overseas to further my cricket.”

Congratulations Naps, King Edward Community very proud of your efforts!
